No where in the world is there a movement of animals as immense as the wildebeest migration, one of the most phenomenal natural spectacles in the world. It is an annual movement by millions of wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Thompson’s gazelle, elands and impalas across the greater Masai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. Wildebeest make the 1800 mile journey across the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya. The migration mostly happens during the month of July and August.
The Mara River crossing activity is considered the climax of the migration period. The huge herd of wildebeest stampede across a fast-flowing river infested with hungry crocodiles. Up to 80,000 of the brave creatures – some weighing up to 43 stone – sprinted across the dangerous waters, jumping up to 10ft in the air. The wildebeest migrate from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania to the greener plains of the Masai Mara in Kenya every year on a tough two-month long 1,800-mile journey
